What it is
How pico laser works at Annaré.
Pico lasers deliver energy in picosecond pulses — trillionths of a second. Because the pulse is so short, pigment is shattered mechanically rather than heated, which means less thermal stress on the surrounding skin and a lower risk of the rebound pigmentation that can follow more aggressive resurfacing.
That matters most for melasma, which is notoriously easy to make worse with heat. A conservative series of Pico sessions, spaced several weeks apart, clears pigment gradually and gives the skin time to settle between visits rather than forcing a result in one aggressive appointment.
The same technology is used for texture and scarring. Fractional delivery creates controlled zones of energy within the skin that prompt remodelling, softening acne, surgical, and injury scars over a series. Realistic expectations are set at consultation: scarring improves, and how much it improves depends on its depth and age.

Step 01
Skin assessment

Treatment
Most patients describe the sensation as a light snap against the skin. Sessions are short. Expect some redness and warmth immediately afterwards, similar to mild sunburn.

The series
Redness usually settles within 12 to 24 hours, and pigment may darken briefly before clearing. Sessions run three to four weeks apart, and diligent sun protection between them is essential to the result.

How many sessions will I need?
Most concerns need a series rather than a single visit. Sun spots may clear in a few sessions, while melasma and scarring typically require more and benefit from a gradual approach. A realistic session count is given at consultation.
Can Pico laser treat melasma?
It is one of the better options for melasma because the ultra-short pulses generate less heat than older lasers, and heat is what tends to aggravate melasma. Treatment is still deliberately conservative, and melasma is managed rather than permanently cured.
Is it safe for my skin tone?
Settings are selected based on your skin type, and darker skin tones are treated more conservatively to reduce the risk of pigment changes. Your suitability and the right protocol are assessed at consultation before any treatment is booked.
What is the downtime?
Expect redness and warmth for the rest of the day, generally settling within 12 to 24 hours. Treated pigment often darkens and flakes over the following week before clearing.
What do I need to do afterwards?
Daily broad-spectrum SPF is not optional — sun exposure between sessions will undo the result and can trigger new pigment. Skip retinoids, acids, and heat treatments for several days.
Will it help my acne scars?
Fractional Pico treatment softens acne scarring over a series by prompting remodelling in the skin. Deeper, older scars improve rather than disappear, and microneedling is sometimes combined with laser for a better outcome.
